How To Wash Your Workwear & Wet Weather Gear
Breathable, Seam sealed rainwear garments are built to handle the storm - but they also need proper care to keep performing. Dirt, oil, sweat and animal residues can clog the waterproof membrane and reduce breathability, and even cause the garment to fail -that doesn’t mean it’s faulty, it means it needs you to take care of it!! Here’s how to clean and revive your technical waterproof gear.
Pro Tip: Wash your wet weather gear every 10–15 uses or whenever water stops beading on the surface. A clean jacket is a dry jacket
Lack of proper care will void your guarantee.
YOU’LL NEED
- A front-loading washing machine
- Gentle Powder detergent with no bleach or harsh lightening agents
- Technical DWR restorer (optional but recommended)
- Drying rack or clothes hanger
STEP 1: PREP
- Close all zips, pockets, and Velcro tabs, make sure your pockets are empty
- Loosen drawcords and cuffs
- Remove visible dirt/mud with a soft brush if needed
- Read the care label – different membranes or face fabrics may have specific needs
STEP 2: WASH
- Use cold or warm water on a gentle cycle
- Add the detergent to the machine as directed – do not use any softeners or bleach
- Wash one garment at a time for best results
STEP 3: RINSE (IMPORTANT)
- Run an rinse cycle to remove all detergent residue - crucial for maintaining breathability and waterproof performance
DRY & REACTIVATE DWR
- Tumble dry on low to medium heat if the care label allows - this helps reactivate the DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating
- If your jacket doesn’t allow tumble drying, hang to dry or place on a drying rack lying as flat as possible then, use a warm iron (no steam) with a towel between the garment and the iron to avoid damaging the face fabric.
- Depending on the frequency of use you can restore the water repellent finish, we recommend applying a DWR replenisher spray such as Nik Wax while damp, then heat-activate as above
DRY & REACTIVATE DWR
Use fabric softener or bleach
✘ Dry clean
✘ Iron directly on the fabric
✘ Store while damp
